There are 2 lighthouses in the
area, museums, bay, and Historic Nye Beach. Newport has a old-world charm with historic
places and landmarks. The Yaquina Bay Bridge, completed in 1936, is perhaps the most

Newport is a great place to watch for whales. They migrate from California to Alaska and back again. Peak seasons include Mid-December to late January and again Mid-March to the first part of June, when more than 23,000 whales migrate along Oregon's coastline. 300 hundred to 400 whales also summer along Lincoln County's coast, making whale-watching possible almost all year around. The beaches in and around Newport area include Beverly Beach, Nye Beach, Agate Beach and others. The nearby state parks are Yaquina Head, Beverly Beach, Devil's Punch Bowl, Lost Creek and South Beach. There are various galleries located throughout the city, enjoy treasures from local artists which include seascape paintings, jewelry, bronze sculpturing, pottery, basket weaving, glass blowing and much more. Newport's Seafood & Wine Festival offers sampling from nearly all of Oregon's 100 wineries, as well as dozens of food booths featuring local seafood specialties prepared by some of the finest chefs in the West.This takes place in February. Entertainment includes a variety of arts and crafts booths and music. This three-day event takes place in February and has become a major Oregon Coast tradition, attracting more than 20,000 visitors each year. Loyalty Days, Organized by the Loyalty Days committee takes place in May and celebrates patriotism and the military with a huge festival. Attendees at this four-day event can tour visiting military ships, enjoy a carnival and watch a parade as it makes its way down Newport's main stretch on Highway 101. Yaquina Bay oyster beds first attracted settlers to Newport in 1862. Then in 1866 a visionary pioneer named Sam Case built Newport's first tourist destination and named the town "Newport." Electricity and refrigeration became available in 1908 thus booming the seafood industry. The construction of the Yaquina Head Lighthouse helped make Yaquina Bay a favorite shipping port. The seafood industry still thrives today. Newport's Bayfront is home to Oregon's largest commercial fishing fleet.
