Oregon Coast Brookings Oregon

The coastal town of Brookings is located at the extreme southern end of the Oregon Coast. It is known its moderate climate. Brookings unique weather can be sunny and warm weather while much of the Pacific Northwest may be covered with clouds and fog. Brookings is known as the Banana Belt Of Oregon. It has very pleasant summer weather. Brookings can be wet in the winter, but still receive sunny days in between storms. Winter temperatures range between the 50s & 60s at night.

Brookings is located next to the mouth of the Chetco River and sits on Chetco's north bank. Gold Beach is 40 minutes north and Crescent City is 20 minutes south.

Kite flying is very popular at Harris Beach State Park and the port area. See the annual Kite Festival and watch the professional and amateur kite flyers.

Brookings-Harbor is also famous for growing nearly 90% of America's Easter lilies.You can see the fields of blooming lilies when you drive between Brookings-Harbor and Crescent City in the early summer.

Samuel H. Boardman State Park is 4 miles north of Brookings-Harbor, it covers 11 miles of beautiful Oregon and coastline. The Oregon Coast Trail, which is 7 miles, is the best way to see one of the world's most spectacular stretches of coastline. House Rock Viewpoint and Whalehead Viewpoint are many viewpoints along the trail. Also check out Boardman Park, a great tidepooling area for seeing starfish, crabs, sea urchins, crabs, sea anemones and other ocean life during the low tide.

Located about six miles north of the California border on Hwy. 101, Brookings-Harbor is the only spot in the continental U.S. that was bombed by Japan, a foreign power in World War II. The bomb site is marked by a monument accessed from the Bombsite Trail, located on South Bank Road about ten miles inland from Brookings-Harbor. Twenty years later, the pilot of the plane returned to Brookings during their annual Azalea Festival, and presented the town with his personal samurai sword. The sword is now on display at Brookings City Hall. It had been carried in his plane for good luck.

Loeb State Park is eight miles up the north bank of the Chetco River, and is home to Oregon's largest stand of coastal Redwoods. Visit the Redwood Nature Trail, a redwood grove with trees up to 350 ft tall and 25 ft in diameter.
